Training Programme

Reading Therapist Qualifying Programme

The programme equips professionals with specialised skills to support children with literacy-related difficulties that extend beyond conventional classroom instruction. It focuses on challenges in reading, comprehension, writing, and spelling, including dyslexia, dysnomia, hyperlexia, dyscalculia, dysgraphia, dysorthographia, and related learning differences.

Children facing such difficulties often experience repeated academic failure, leading to frustration, reduced self-esteem, and compromised emotional well-being. The programme emphasises evidence-informed, individualised literacy interventions and applied reading therapy practices, enabling practitioners to provide targeted and effective support. Through structured therapeutic approaches, professionals play a critical role in strengthening literacy skills, academic confidence, and long-term engagement with reading.

Certification for the training programme is conferred by the International Association of Counselors and Therapists (IACT). The IACT Reading Therapist Programme is structured across three progressive certification tiers (Credentialed, Registered, and Board-certified), reflecting progressive levels of professional training, competency, and clinical application. This tiered framework allows practitioners to advance systematically, demonstrating enhanced expertise and adherence to internationally recognised standards of practice. It aligns with the Association’s membership recognition.

Credentialed

This tier recognises the completion of foundational theoretical training and introductory practical competencies in literacy and reading therapy. It is designed for practitioners at the early stage of professional development and fulfils  requirements for associate membership of the Association.

Registered

This tier certifies the practitioner’s ability to implement evidence-informed literacy intervention strategies within structured or supervised practice settings. It supports advancement to Registered membership and reflects sustained professional engagement, applied competence.

Board-certified

Board Certification represents the highest tier of professional recognition, acknowledging advanced clinical expertise, ethical practice, and leadership in literacy and reading therapy. This tier supports eligibility for Fellow membership of the Association and may include roles in supervision, mentoring, programme development, or professional leadership.
