Reading Therapist is a specialised professional who focuses on assessing, diagnosing, and providing targeted intervention for children (and sometimes adults) experiencing literacy difficulties. This role is particularly common in the context of supporting students with specific learning differences such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, dysnomia, hyperlexia etc and related challenges in reading, writing, spelling, comprehension, and language processing.
Reading therapist goes beyond standard instruction by using evidence-based, structured, and often multisensory approaches (e.g., methods inspired by Orton-Gillingham principles) to remediate underlying skill gaps that affect literacy performance.
By bridging research, practice, and community engagement, the Association contributes to improved literacy outcomes, informed service access, and greater societal understanding of reading development and its challenges.
Reading therapists in Singapore are often trained through specialised programmes (e.g., those offered by organisations like International Association of Counselors and Therapists). Many work in private therapy clinics, allied health practices, or specialist literacy centres.
